Tasmania’s No.1 tennis facility, the Domain Tennis Centre, proudly opens six new “Prestige Plexicushion” hard courts at the Domain today. The lord mayor alderman Rob Valentine and the president of the club Paul Lovell addressed the media in relation to the many contributors of this major upgrade, which will all be in readiness for January’s Moorilla international and other national junior tournaments being held in Hobart in 2009.

The six new hard courts have been installed to the same design specifications as the Australian open surface at Melbourne Park, which will be very advantageous to this year’s Moorilla players. This year’s Moorilla field is the best assembled so far in the event’s 15 year history , with potentially 4 former top 10 players signed up , 3 former winners and several other hot chances competing .

Alderman Rob Valentine said “The council were pleased and committed to contributing to sporting infrastructure improvements in close proximity to the CBD. This produces many business benefits and encourages greater participation and sporting choices for our community in general. To have such a wonderful tennis facility so close to our city, with arguably the best views in the world, makes Hobart a very unique place.”

Paul Lovell outlined that the $ 450,000 upgrade had taken just 3 months to complete and included the laying of some 520 tonnes of asphalt base before the 10 layer Plexicushion acrylic surface was applied. Paul said “that it was important, as the state’s major tennis facility, that the national hard court “blue” surface be installed as this will assist junior and senior player development programs, the staging of 3 Australian ranking tournaments in 2009 attracting mainland players, as well as the opportunity for general club, social and visitor players to have a hit on the fantastic new grand slam hard court surface. The Domain Tennis Centre is all about general community player access whilst encouraging a healthy lifestyle and participation opportunities for all”

President, Paul Lovell said “The project costs were covered by a joint initiative between the Domain Tennis Centre, Hobart city council and tennis Australia and the club was especially pleased to have achieved a 100 % Tasmanian involvement in the construction phases engaging no fewer than 40 design, construction and installation employees over the project.”

“The Hobart City Council employees involved in promoting this initiative, as well as their operational staff during the project construction, are to be highly congratulated for their commitment and wonderful communication and assistance”, the president said.
